FAQs

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art focused on ground fighting, submissions, and leverage. It’s designed to help a smaller, weaker person defend against a larger opponent using technique and positioning.

Yes, safety is a top priority. BJJ is practiced with control and mutual respect. Beginners are taught how to tap and how to train safely with partners.

Not at all! Our classes welcome complete beginners. Drop in to one of our Level I classes and one of our instructors will walk you through the basics at your own pace. Bonus if you come 30 minutes before class starts – an instructor will spend some one-on-one time with you to show you the movements you can expect from your first ever class!

In Gi classes, you wear a traditional BJJ kimono and use it for grips and techniques. In no-Gi, you wear rash guards and shorts, and the pace is often faster with different grips and strategies.

If it’s a Gi class, wear a white BJJ Gi if you have one. We have limited sizes available on loan for your first couple of classes, so send us a note ahead of time at info@frogtownjj.com to see how we can accommodate you for your first time on the mat. Please keep in mind that if you join our gym, we will require you to wear a white Gi to our regular classes. Patches are okay.

For a no-Gi class, wear athletic shorts and a rash guard or fitted t-shirt. Spats (or leggings) are optional, but preferred. No pockets, zippers, or metal on clothing.

Both are great options for beginners and we recommend you try both in tandem. In Gi training, you can generally expect a slower and more technical pace due to the grips and friction the Gi provides, allowing for more control and deliberate movement.

No-Gi training moves at a faster pace, with quicker transitions and scrambles since there are fewer ways to grip and slow your opponent down. Gi helps build strong fundamentals and grip fighting, while no-Gi emphasizes speed, agility, and body control. Both styles complement each other and offer unique challenges.

It’s never too late to start training! At the moment, we offer classes for adults. In June 2025, we will also begin offering a regular BJJ class schedule for kids between 7 and 13, as well as special weeklong day camps in the summertime. Most kids 14+ are best suited joining the adult Level I classes.

If you are interested in enrolling your child and have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at info@frogtownjj.com.
